“Bilbo Baggins was standing at his door after breakfast smoking an enormous long wooden pipe that reached nearly down to his wooly toes.”
This is the start of what would become a fun little thought experiment I did with the 1977 Rankin Bass Hobbit cartoon. The premise was to make a series of cel-shaded illustrations in the style of the cartoon, but feature scenes from the book that were cut from the film.
The idea came about after drawing this scene which was
, technically, in the cartoon. I did my best to replicate the way the characters are drawn, and as such there are a few things that run counter to how I would normally draw things. The way hands are drawn, for example, are quite grizzled and old looking, so I tried to use reference of gestures in the cartoon to get them to look stylistically right. I also wanted these to look like animation cels were layered over a hand painted backgrounds. They are meant to have a sort of “artificial” feel to them.
I hope you enjoy the following illustrations. There will be 8 in total including this one.
