It sickens me when political pundits ignore medial complexities and progress by turning everything into a black and white “moral” issue. I had the option of using Rush Limbaugh (who made the “slut” remark), Foster Friess (who suggested women put aspirin between their legs as a contraceptive), or Rick Santorum (who believes birth control is sinful) as the “heavy” in this comic. Then I remembered Santorum is currently in a position to potentially run my country, and the decision was a no brainer.
EDIT: I'm getting a lot of people talking about the tax issue, basically "why should I have to pay taxes so this drug can be distributed for free to people who'll just use it for sex?"
Well... just think about this: You're ALREADY paying taxes for Viagra... and that's primarily ONLY used for sex and has few other health benefits. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that it's covered by Medicare or Medicaid, which are government funded healthcare options.
If you have a question about anything anyone brings up I strongly recommend you check out the following [link] from Planned Parenthood. A lot of the questions asked here are answered there and it's better to get your information from a reputable site than from a cartoonist.
EDIT 2: If the above link is not enough, I strongly recommend checking out this second [link] which is about the truth behind the testimony that caused a lot of this controversy in the first place.
Some people just never seem to think of the many other uses for birth control.... As a healthy 19 year-old, I'm not even remotely interested in sex. But I'd rather not suffer intense pain and mood swings that come with not being pregnant. I have high testosterone levels as well (not severely, but enough to make my life difficult) and I take birth control to help with all of these problems. My reasons have nothing to do with actually keeping pregnancy at bay because I'm not sleeping around. This is true for every friend of mine that is on it and as well as a majority of girls I've talked to that are on the pill.
These people need to pull their heads out of their asses and stop having double standards.
While those benefits are true, (actually different oral contraceptives offer those benefits, no one pills does all of those things very effectively) I get the feeling this piece focuses on the exception not the rule. My father is extremely conservative, and he listens to and respects the men listed above. Naturally I was raised under those ideals. We all went to high school and/or college, and maybe it was just my experience, but I only ever met one girl who took birth control for something other than preventing pregnancy. What I'm saying is that for every girl taking it for cramps, there are at least 20 girls taking it for sex. In fact, I, a girl raised by a conservative catholic, only started on birth control (at a planned parenthood no less) because My boyfriend (of 1.5 years) and I wanted to be as safe/smart as possible. Not so I could go frolic in an orgy. There will always be girls who abuse the availability of birth control and their bodies, just as there will always be Conservatives who take it too far sometimes. My point is that there is always two sides to every story, and that this one only shows one side. That doesn't mean that the other side doesn't have some truth in it as well.
Your father listens to and respects Rush Limbaugh? The man who has had four wives, an Oxycontin addiction, and traveled to the Dominican republic with illegal Viagra to search for prostitutes? But still claims women who want insurance to pay for birth control are sluts and prostitutes. That sleazy, asinine, corporate bought and paid tub of lard named Rush Limbaugh!?
My original response was well written and thought out, but when you dismiss it by using lewd language. That just shows just what kind of character you really have I was only retorting with the amount of disrespect you gave my father and me, who you know nothing about.
