Our US constitution permits the right for all citizens to bear arms, making the country wide banning of guns extraordinarily difficult to achieve and technically unconstitutional.

I dislike guns and am all for stricter gun laws to prevent further tragedies from occurring, but at the same time... banning everything would place an enormous amount of power into the hands of the sick individual who freely disobeys the law.

I don't know what the solution is.

--------

Edit: To the people saying "the police wouldn't lose their guns if stricter laws were enforced!"... no duh. This is a joke, not a depiction of a realistic scenario or a blueprint for a flawed solution.

Outside that, I truly appreciate the number of thoughtful discussions that are going on as a result of this illustration! It's really awesome to see so many people being respectful to each other when discussing such complex issues. Thank you everyone for being so mature about this topic and I look forward to reading your discussions more in depth. :)

We in Mongolia have very strict gun control (hunting rifles are permitted) and we have almost no gun related crime in the last few decades. Gun control works.

Americans are just insecure as hell. Also incredibly dumb to think that their rifles can stop the US government (with stealth bombers and nuclear missiles) from having its way.

I like this cartoon, interesting exaggeration but it serves to drive a point.

The solution has to do a lot with the people themselves, for example in Puerto Rico in order to get a firearms license the kind that you can have in your house but not carry costs about 400 dollars and about a 6 month background investigation and you have to take profesional classes on firearm handling.

In order to be able to carry one (for a job or personal safety) you have to have acquired the first license and spend about 900 dollars more and make a court case as to why you should be allowed to carry one and to prove you are in good mental health. For both licenses you have to provide at least 3 people who are not family and they will receive an interview about your mental health. And a judge decides wether you should get it or not.

This means that very few people in Puerto Rico are able to own guns legally. Yet Puerto Rico has one of the highest if not the highest incidence of gun crimes and gun murders per capita in the United States. Not only that but the only result of this type of gun control is an increase of illegally owned guns and criminals profiting from it. Law abiding citizens having a harder time acquiring one to defend themselves from the law disregarding criminals who own guns regardless of what the law says about it. It cost me about 1300 to get a legal semi-automatic gun license plus the cost of the weapon itself. It cost me 300 to get an illegal full auto AK-47 in the streets. Stricter Gun control is not always the solution, specially if you live somewhere were guns are part of the culture like in the states. Education I think is a much better solution.

Well, regulating guns will make it easier, signifficantly, to track illegal guns. Yeah, nuts will still get their guns. But you can at least make sure you can control it a little bit more. Like, make sure people who are insane can't get them. I'd never trust myself with a firearm... I'm glad I can't get it in case I snap some day.

The solution is common sense and responsibility, really, which is a difficult thing to take up. I don't usually like your political comics but this one I can definitely nod to.

It's not gun control we need, it's psychopath control that's necessary. Mental institutions, so on, were slowly swept under the rug in favor of more laws that only affect the law abiding citizens of the country. The recent tragedies could have been avoided if people had been responsible, because 9 out of 10 times these nuts have a history and they weren't properly locked up or treated.

Either way, sneak around the guy! the mask makes blind spots!

I totally agree. Changing the laws won't really stop people who just break the laws anyway. But the problem is that people are flawed and anyone could end up misusing their ability to own a gun....

Love the cartoon. I think it's ironic that the officer on the left still has a knife, haha.

Your description = my exact opinion
Were there a magical button I could press and remove guns from the world (or at least civillians) I would do that, but now that we're here, what're'ya gonna do?

I disagree with the sentiment that it is unconstitutional to restrict guns; some weapons are banned for civilians already--automatic guns, nuclear weapons--and THAT isn't considered a violation of the second amendment. Therefore, a ban of weapon X is not unconstitutional; it might be wrong, but the constitution itself is not an argument.

I would like to point out that gun control laws aren't about totally BANNING guns, that would be unfeasible.
It's about potentially criminalising automatic weapons, and more closely regulating gun and ammunition sales, to limit the number of guns in circulation and decreases the chances that they'll end up in the hands of somebody who'll misuse them.
For example, say you want to get a driver's license, I'm not exactly sure how it works in the US, but if it's anything like it is here in Australia, you have to go through months of training and tests before you can even drive unsupervised, and another few years before you are fully licensed to drive.
On the other hand, in most parts of the US, you have to wait up to 15 days for a criminal and mental health record check, if you pass that, you can buy a gun.
The laws are a bit different from state to state, but as a general rule, if you're at least 21 (or even 18!) and have no criminal record, you can own a gun, no license or permit needed (unless you plan to keep it concealed).
Automatic weapons require a more thorough background check, but all the same. Guns are extremely dangerous tools, built with the express purpose of causing harm, and it's easier to get one of those legally that it is to drive a car legally.

It's also relevant that guns and ammunition are a lot cheaper than cars and petrol.

Why am I not surprised by this being here. God fucking damnit.
I'm not even going to bother with the long-winded explanations here.
I'm just going to drop some facts, and then let you figure out for yourself what it means.
