Poor Sam. Only you would be unlucky enough to get a Doom Day. But that's why we like you. (and I love his expression.) And my, doesn't Doom look even more peppy than usual. He must not get the chance to give out a Doom Day very often.

...I've said it before I'm sure, but I'll say it again anyway. I quite like Doom as a character in your pirate comics. I know he's hard to work in, but he makes the strips quite fun and adds the more...outright supernatural element to the comics, beyond that of what's usually there. I've seen quite a few death/grim reaper looking characters over the years, and Doom is the only one I've ever seen that actually seems to be remotely happy. Every other time I see death and/or the reaper, they're frowning, swinging their scythe, looking incredibly serious, and so on. Doom is a nice change up in that he has fun in his job, and doesn't really kill anyone, he mostly just gives them a really bad day. Something that tells me he isn't really that bad a...well doom specter I suppose. (And this does give a slight boost boost to my theory that Sam is unique among the crew in that he alone has the power to summon Doom, even if it is mostly through bad luck. Which would actually make him quite dangerous if they ever cooperated.) If I may ask though, just what inspired him?

Inspired him? I think it was probably "Phil: The Prince of Insufficient Light" from Dilbert. At the time I was writing a story about me going off to college and all the wacky hijinks I faced as mythological creatures and characters kept messing up my life. Among those were a fat grisly Cupid, a space pirate girl, a sword slinging madman, and doom.

In many stories (Macbeth being one of them) a character will envision a dagger hovering above their heads to symbolize impending doom or death. The dagger doesn't actually DO anything... it's just there to mess with the character's mental state. I thought it would be fun if there was a real character who did that. He just hovers there and waits until you fail at something and then proceeds to derive immense fun and satisfaction from watching the failure ensue.

I never anticipated he'd become so central to the Alex Ze Pirate series, but it just kinda made sense I suppose... Sam is a perpetually "doomed" character after all, and I can get away with having Doom in this series and not in series like "Patty."

You wouldn't care if anyone else used him, do you?

I imagine he has a Doom Day more often than the rest of the crew.
