Fan-Art of Rumiko Takahashis first series, and the series which granted her widespread recognition; Urusei Yatsura (or better known to us Americans as Lum. Its odd drawing in her OLD art style. Lum was created when she was first starting out as a comic artist and thus her art was not quite as refined as it is today. It certainly is a FAR CRY from Inu-Yasha or Ranma ½ isnt it?

Only at first. The further you get into the manga, the more it begins to resemble her more modern art style, especially towards the end. Though, that shouldn't be too surprising since she started Ranma ½ the same year she finished Urusei Yatsura.
Awesome pic, btw! I like the inclusion of Ataru and Shinobu. It's rare to see UY fanart on dA that isn't solely focused on the ever popular Lum. The other characters need some love, too.

Yeah I'm aware her style matured over time. Unfortunately I can only find the first 4 volumes of Lum in english. Guess it didn't sell well enough otherwise it would be easier to find...
I only ever saw her artwork mature through Maison Ikkoku (which incidentally is the only manga I've read of hers that I've been able to finish completely) and thus have not see Lum mature. For me, artistically, I only ever see the rather crude art that she began with.

er not quite. Ataru (the boy) is a sex obsessed guy who loves any woman he can get his greedy little paws on. Shinobu (the girl on the right) is his primary girlfriend, but even she gets annoyed with his sex obsessed nature. Unfortunately for Ataru, he unwittingly gets attached to an Alien named LUM (the bikini girl) who only wants Ataru, so she ZAPS him with electricity whenever he strays from her. Of course this makes him hate her, since she won't allow him to go after girls...
it gets pretty complicated pretty quickly...

Interesting that you'd mention Maison Ikkoku, since she worked on both that and Urusei Yatsura at the same time.
And Maison Ikkoku originally didn't sell well in the U.S., either, but in recent years, Viz decided to rerelease it and, due to the immense popularity of Inu-Yasha, it's sold a lot better this time around. I only hope that Viz would consider doing the same with Urusei Yatsura, but I see no signs of them doing any such thing.
