Sam is the unworthy slob (the cabin boy) so he doesn’t get much respect from his superiors. Also, he’s a tragic character in that no matter what he tries to do, he will ultimately fail. Pathos is very important to comedy and if you didn’t feel bad for Sam, it wouldn’t be funny. I use to hate pathos because it’s always such a downer, but I’ve learned to work with it and now I find the tragic funny sometimes. Poor Sam... he tries so hard...
