Artificially infusing something with innovation “just because” is almost as bad, if not worse, than slowly stagnating. I fell into this trap early on when only a month into the series I was accuse of stagnating simply because I was making the comics with a set template/formula. I tried changing things up and striving to improve as my critics demanded, but it always felt forced and not genuine.
Innovation is not a “free pass” to greatness. Innovating “because you can” doesn’t automatically make your work genius. You can innovate and be detrimental to your overall goals (such was the case with me). So i guess the lesson here is to simply be critical of your own work and innovate when it’s warranted. Always strive to improve and get better with your art, but don’t go changing things willy-nilly “just because.” Make sure there’s a reason FOR that change.
