This is a series I call “So You’re a Cartoonist?” which deals with all of the typical questions or remarks I receive whenever I tell people that I draw cartoons for a living.

I’ve been coloring my work on the computer since the 80’s and “Deluxe Paint” yet it still surprises me how even in the year 2011 so many people don’t grasp the concept of drawing first on paper and then coloring on it the computer. For the average person out there it can only be one or the other and it confuses the hell out of them when you try to explain it.

I don’t often get this from other artists, but when I do it tends to be because a lot of people were brought up on the idea that you can draw directly into the computer with tablets. While I do use a tablet for some things (such as touch ups and drawing shadows) I don’t feel comfortable classifying my work as exclusively digital since I do so much pre-planning, sketching, and inking by hand on ordinary paper.

If you wanna know more about my specific inking and coloring methods, please follow these links...

Seeing this from you sorta brightened up my day because I can never wait to see this series from you. Many younger and even professional artists can relate to this series because it fully explains the things that people don't understand about us artists which is why I like it so much.

Anyways, I feel a lot of emotion and frustration going through this comic, which is typical for any artist but you've portrayed it quite well and the hand movements and expressions on yourself even make me feel angry.

The color composition though, such as yellow, peach red, and blue really throw the eyes off in this. You may want to, in future comics, consider the color wheel and how colors mix together.

Other than that, quite good. I enjoyed reading this and can easily relate that people don't even understand how an artist draws on the computer in the first place even though that's not what was presented in here. Those were just my first thoughts when reading this though.
What do you think?

The only way for me to make something digitally is to draw it on paper first, then scan it, load it into Paint.net, trace over the lines to darken them (why didn't I think about inking?) then coloring them in. Other wise I have no idea how to make the stupid digital lines look right to me.

I don't understand why people don't get that concept. It should be so simple to understand.
