Comic artist Guillem March recently posted a sequence that was cut from The New 52‘s Catwoman #3. The pitch: Catwoman figures out Batman’s true identity and uses her feminine wiles to exploit him to do her bidding.

Then you actually SEE the sequence and realize that it involves Catwoman doing a strip-tease on Bruce Wayne’s front lawn. The scene was ultimately scrapped to focus on Catwoman coping over the loss of her friend Lola.

It's great that that scene was cut... but what worries me is this inside glimpse into what “could have been” shows that these outdated ideas of what feminist power and agency actually are... is still present and lingering even in 2011. (Don’t believe me? Look up the various ways they try to explain the “boob window” on Power Girl’s costume)

THANK YOU for mentioning Power Girl's coin slot! I swear it's like, the artist drew her, realized last minute that she wasn't showing any cleavage, panicked and hurriedly drew a hole in her costume's chest right before putting her in print.

The article is a sad terrible truth; and the worse thing is that some bunch of idiots are perpetuating misogyny as empowerment.

It has to stop...

Oddly enough I had (have cause I'm still going to do it.) the same idea to do that with an evil version of one my characters, because I think people can use their natural gifts for good or evil (brains equal cures or planned robberies, brawn equals helping people move things or beating people up to get their way.) So of course sexy can be used that way too. I mean considering how we can be sexist knuckle dragging idiots, a girl in a Rob Liefeld outfit would distract us to where she could haves us do pretty much whatever she wants easily. Although I did buy the 'Powergirl's boob window is because she feels she has no emblem to identify with therefore she can't have an actual thing on her chest.' Considering I believe in the JLU version where she was an evil clone of Supergirl. I mean of course if you went from evil clone to trying to be good you would feel a loss in identity. Although it would be funny if Powergirl's boob window came from it getting cut out or something...

Well, "independent woman" and "taking advantage of her sexuality" inherently conflict with each other.
Why can't "independent woman" just mean "independent human"? Because the whole idea of the the oppression of women is that they're viewed as sex objects rather than people with their own ideas.

Unless someone can tell me I'm wrong, I think that's a good solution.

I think that it depends I mean if a woman is using her sexuality for her own gain is that ruining her independence that would be like a guy who is strong would that make him a 'dependent man' just because that is the what guys are basically supposed to be/do? I think it come down to how you view it, and how it is executed. I mean I have a similar idea of a character using her sexuality to get what she wants, but I feel guilty when I think about the idea or draw because since I am a guy that I might just be degrading to women, but a female friend of mine said that it was okay. Again it all comes down to view and execution.

I guess I was a little narrow-minded. Independence is simply relying on yourself, and that can be expressed through any ability, skill, or advantage.

But the concept is a little abstract, because we're always independent. We are always relying on our own models of systems in order to make decisions and interface the outside world. And every one of those models inherently "relies" on other people or other things, so the concept is murky at best.

I agree with you, though, a woman can be independent through any measure. This, of course, partially defeats the purpose of the word "independence", though. I can't define it well enough in order illuminate it's purpose and application, at the moment. Maybe another time.

I mean if you are trying to argue the independence of being on ones own in the world I can kind of see that argument, and that relying on her sexuality does negate that independence. But like you just said our existence relies on others.  I mean I guess it all comes down to how we view being independent. I view independence as being able to sustain yourself and provide and care for yourself. But with the way our society works it isn't like that. We need jobs, unless you've decided to be a farmer who builds EVERYTHING(From house to tools) with their own hands, and can somehow be alone in life you will have to depend on someone in some way. I'm a little tired hope I made sense.
