Read the next episode of “So, You’re A Cartoonist?” here: [link]

***

This is a sequel to the “Follow the Leader” comic. A lot of people have wondered why writers tend to feel like their characters have a life of their own when logically we’re the creators and thus have authoritative control over everything they say or do.

It’s kinda hard to explain but basically every character has wants, desires, fears, hates, loves, etc just like real people. If you give them a scenario to face, each one will react differently according to those traits. Sometimes writing like this can become intuitive, and when you’re writing you don’t consciously realize how it works... it just works.

Can totally relate to that! The best characters I develop are the ones that tell /me/ about themselves and what they want to do, not the other way around. And trying to get them to do something they wouldn't normally do had mixed results; damn hilarious, or down right fail.

THEY ARE FRIGGEN RP CHARACTORS !!!'' and I said ''I treat my oc's like real peoples'' XD made me think of that, how it's soo true what this says XD

This is so true. And so hard to explain to my freinds that aren't writers/graphic novelists.

Totally! People give me weird looks when I tell them my characters aren't listening to me!
Glad I'm not the only one.

It's true, mine almost feel like real people.

I know that feeling. Heck, if I'm bored, I just think of a situation and start drawing my characters. Next thing ya know, they're either blushing or crying, laughing or shouting. One's hitting the other, etc.

These guys are my best friends. :)

O.O Smores is a better idea! *pulls out graham crackers*

Yeah, I may be just a beginner when I'm writing stories, but I really try hard to make each and every character I make different from one another. It's difficult sometimes but I manage. I stopped thinking hard and started thinking while I wrote, and just let the creativity do the thinking and writing for me.
