Doing fanart is both rewarding and frustrating. It's rewarding because it's a great way to draw in new fans and viewers by showing them something they're familiar with.

It's frustrating because your original characters and series can often get overlooked or be not as popular as a fanart piece you produced in 10 minutes. I've seen some really talented artists fall down that slippery slope and struggle to get back up again.

But be careful. A few years ago, someone requested a picture for their best friend's birthday of a character from One Piece. I wasn't a fan of it personally, but I helped out anyway. Posted it to my dA gallery once the friend had been properly surprised. That picture alone has more views than all the rest of my stuff combined (and more favorites too) It has more views than my profile, so I know people aren't even interested in the rest of my stuff. I struggled with whether to leave it up because it was the most popular thing I'd ever done, or take it down because it wasn't a real reflection of my work and didn't belong in my gallery. I left it up, but I now use the term "One-Piece'd" to describe when an artist has one manga fan art in their gallery and you can hear crickets in the rest.

Pikachu you evil bastard XD

He's just evil. And I'm going to agree with you on that one. It really is that frustrating that fan art pieces seem to be so much more popular, and I think it's because it's more well known and some people just aren't fans of Original Characters & Series.

My girlfriend tries her hardest not to put up her Pokemon drawings, because they tend to be her most viewed and faved, simply for being Pokemon, while the rest of her stuff goes unloved.

So you recomend to stick with your own characters and projects more often than making fan art?
