I honestly didn't get this when I read the script because I've hardly played any Final Fantasy game. In case you're in the same boat as me, the old fellow apparently liked to curse "you spoony bard" in the SNES translation.

And there's only one scene where he calls Edward a spoony bard. (The line also appears in the GBA and DS remakes as "you spoony bard".)
