This is an illustration i've been working on for about 5 days now. I was really bored at my job (Video Retail) and I started sketching on my pad this character. I didn't really think about him, he just came out. I really liked the design and soon the whole enviroment and the bird and even the backpack just came out afterwards.
I scanned in the sketch really large (about 300dpi) and then painted the base colors in Painter5 using my Wacom Tablet. I then brought that over into Photoshop6 (since painter5 doesn't have layers) and started "inking" the character and the enviroments. I used Photoshop for inking and to add a few finishing touches (such as the overal hue and contrast of the image).
Why is this character on another planet? Why is he dressed in old victorian clothing? What kind of bird is that? You'll have to make those decisions for yourself. For me, it's just natural and makes perfect sense. ^_^

The tone of the colours really bring out the old, dusty tales of explorers discovering the unknown lands, something that doesn't feel possible in the modern age with almost everything already been explored. So the idea of a different planet is a perfect solution! Those questions need to be asked to give this feeling. Nice moon shape, too. The guy is also incredibly quirky, a likeable character that would be an interesting protagonist for a story about discovering this planet. I really like this picture.
This has got a really beautiful surreal scene, and awesome colours. I reckon you should make more pictures like this than do comics all the time.

In your case it would probably be comics because it's your main thing, but making art isn't all about making a profit. I can honestly say I'd buy a print of this if it was a little more on the realistic side and polished. But I guess if you just prefer writing/drawing humor it's fine.

Sad thing is, when you've been destitute for many many years and you finally make a modicum of income to support yourself and actually live comfortably... the prospect of going back to destitute for the sake of "artistic integrity" is pretty unappealing. Cynical though that may sound, it's the truth.
IS.
AMAZING.
