CONTEXT: EA released Sim City 5 which required an always online connection to play, even if you were playing single player. Needing to stay connected often resulted in spontaneous disconnects, which could corrupt your town. Coupled with the connection issue was the fact that the servers needed to play online were overloaded, resulting in insane wait times just to log in and play. It was, by far, one of the most disastrous video game launches to date. To apologize for it, EA gave away copies of some of their popular games for free.
