Culture Clash!I'm still groggy from my trip, so here's a list of oddities I noticed being a foreigner experiencing another country for the first time.
If you want power, you need to turn the outlets on, and to do that you gotta push a switch down.
TV has far fewer commercial breaks.
English police are super nice (watched the British version of "COPS" and was amazed at how polite everyone was, even the criminals).
The second floor is called the first.
French Fries are called Chips.
Chips are called Crisps.
American-centric music doesn't stay here (Heard "Sweet Home Alabama" quite a number of times over there).
You are not expected to tip people (this was very hard for me to accept and I always felt guilty not tipping our waiters).
You are not expected to clean up your messes in food courts or.. anywhere actually (Janitors come by and clean up for you. Has something to do with security and getting rid of bomb threats).
Elevators are called Lifts.
Air conditioning seems scarce.

Mature themes in American AnimationWhen I first discovered Anime, my mind was blown. Here were Japanese animations being made which told adult stories with sex, violence, and all sorts of things I'd never seen before done in American films. As a teenager the constant pandering to children and the reluctance to accept more mature themes and ideas in American animated films pissed me off. Why can't american cartoons be taken more seriously and have stuff for adults too outside of South Park and The Simpsons?
In 1998 Stephen Spielberg tried to change that. After having a successful run of kids cartoons (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pink and the Brain, etc), he took it a step further by giving us a PRIME TIME cartoon series aimed at adults. It was called "Invasion America." It was a sci-fi epic, featured a slew of big name actors including Leonard Nimoy, and featured more adult oriented themes such as sex, violence, and swearing!
It sucked and was a resounding failure.

Internet BullyingFor many kids growing up in the 80's, if you were bullied in school you were able to "tough it out" because you knew your social interaction with said bully was isolated only to when you were in close proximity of them. When the bell range and you went home, you could dismiss the bully's taunting and physical abuse and be reminded of friends and family who supported you and kept your spirits up.
But in today's day and age of seemingly constant online connectivity, the "victims" of bullying have a harder time escaping. Once the bell rings, they're still potentially subject to be bullied via verbal assaults online, which often goes completely unnoticed by parents and friends. The worse part of this is that we're often told that because it happens "on the internet" there's no real consequences of trolling or bullying, which is far from true.

Updates for April 1stLooks like my April Fools joke went over pretty well. I was quite surprised to see the response, honestly! Was it the most original prank in the books? Absolutely not, but considering that I usually ignore April Fools Day and that people STILL believed it, I think it's alright. Sometimes the oldest jokes are the best and it's not like this was a contest trying to outdo everyone around me. Just having some fun for a change, which is something I need to do more often.
Also, it shows how many people actually followed the link. Anyone who read the journal and followed the link to the trolololo song would've known it was a joke. But it seems a LOT of people didn't bother doing that, hehe.

Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.

A Very Important UpdateI haven't posted here on DA in a while, so this might be new to a lot of you, but if you've been following some of the stuff happening over on tumblr it won't be unexpected. For the past several weeks I've been getting steadily worse both mentally and physically. I've been depressed before, but I've never been as bad as I've been recently. I've lashed out at people, been getting angrier and grumpier, been finding it harder and harder to listen to people giving me positive feedback, and have even started rapidly losing a lot of weight.
My enjoyment for drawing has been dropping, and many of you have probably noticed that I've been taking more and more time off lately. For every few comics I post, I tend to spend another week recuperating. But within the past 2 weeks it's spiked so bad that I seriously have to consider what's more important: my health or drawing.

Nintendo’s MiiversePrior to E3 starting up, Nintendo has done something unusual for them... they've given us more information about the Wii-U before their press conference! Specifically they've gone over the online capabilities of the Wii-U and how social networking works with it.
Nintendo showcased a video of a guy struggling to beat a Zombie boss. He uses the Wii-U Game Pad to look up other users who have had trouble with it. He even posts a note saying he's stuck. His friend sees the note on his mobile device and calls him, but instead he decides to contact another Wii-U user using the built in camera to communicate with video. He talks to an elderly grandpa who tells him how to beat the Zombie boss and instantly he goes right back into the game and succeeds.
Cheesy though it was, it showcased a number of cool features. The first of course being the fact there will be message boards surrounding specific games which you can communicate on, share screen shots, post questions and answers, etc. The second

My Minecraft Testificate InfestationIn Minecraft there are these squidward like villagers called Testificates. In a recent update they were given new abilities such as having babies to repopulating a town based on the number of houses there are. Since the requirement for a "house" is simply a room with a roof and a door, I decided to spend my time building a massive city for the Testificates to populate, using a generated village as a starting point.
After building a number of houses, I began noticing the little children running wild and there becoming quite a LOT of villagers. I undertook a huge task of building a BIG open area underground with a couple doors and lights. Because the area was so big, the Testificates began to... um... OVER populate.
These little buggers reproduced the village so fast that I couldn't keep up and soon they were overflowing out of buildings. Mob attacks couldn't keep up with the rate they were repopulating, and the iron golems that kept spawning (for every 15 villager a new one spawns) made

Edd Gould, an internet animator responsible for many shorts you've probably seen on youtube, passed away on March 25th. For a long time he had been battling cancer, and unfortunately the cancer ultimately won. I never watched EddsWorld, but a lot of my friends did. He sounded like a wonderful person...His death is very sad. He was young and spent his relatively short life entertaining thousands of people.
