Derpy Hooves vs HasbroSo it has come to my attention that recently Hasbro has (possibly?) ordered a cease and desist letter to WeLoveFine.com for selling Derpy Hooves related T-shirts. This, coupled with the mysterious disappearance of the episode "The Last Roundup" (which is the one where Derpy talks) from iTunes has gotten fans freaked out and panicky. The general belief is that Hasbro wants to stop the cannoning of internet named Derpy from the MLP series due to the backlash of people getting angry for them for doing so in the first place. Petitions are going up ( http://www.change.org/petitions/hasbro-studiosthe-hub-do-not-change-derpys-name ) and blogs are being posted and everyone's going nuts over this.
Here's my two cents:
From browsing around WeLoveFine.com I could see a number of deviantart images being used for T-shirts. Specifically My Little Pony related. Now It's very unlikely that the artists or the website got permission to sell these T-shirts, and whether you like it or not, selling merchan
MinecraftI just got Minecraft and holy hell is it addictive. I've played around with the iPhone app before (building stuff with infinite blocks with no enemies to fear), but I wasn't prepared for how addictive the full version of the game actually is.
To my credit, I had a little help before starting the game by using a seed which spawned me in the middle of a NPC village, thus giving me shelter and resources to survive my first few treacherous nights. But after a few days had passed and I got used to the controls and crafting, I ventured out and built my own little hut and started digging away.
The first few nights were exceptionally scary, even though I was in a nice safe house. But gradually I learned that Creepers are less creepy to me now than they are simply annoying, and I find myself being more creeped out by those ominous Ender Men.

The brilliance of Derpy HoovesAs many of you know in the first season of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" there was an animation mistake resulting in a background character having googly eyes. Internet fans of the show (bronies) latched on to the character and nick-named her Derpy Hooves.
Since the show has become such a huge internet phenomenon, Hasbro has responded to the appreciation by acknowledging the strange character and inserting her into strange places throughout the second season.
In "Feeling Pinky" she appears as the reason for a number of huge objects dropped from the sky.
In "Luna Eclipse" she appears dressed in a Halloween costume of made of paper bags.
In the Rainbowdash and Fluttershy duet song in "May the Best Pet Win" she creepily peeks her head out of the chicken coop.
In "Sweet and Elite" she appears inconspicuously dressed in her paper bag outfit hidden among fancy ponies during Rarity's musical number.

The Derpy Issue Part 2It's come to my attention that Hasbro has, indeed, changed Derpy. In the iTunes version of "the Last Roundup" where she finally talks and Rainbowdash says her name, Derpy no longer has "derpy" eyes (although they do seem to occasionally be crossed), has a different voice actress, and Rainbowdash doesn't say her name. Sadly I can't get behind the bronies on this one. You guys screwed it up for the rest of us and I have no sympathy for your plight. Hasbro is entirely justified in their position as a corporation to protect their properties from perceive negative perceptions, and that would never have happened if we as a community hadn't thrown such a tantrum over a non issue.

"The 'My Little Pony Friendship is Magic' series has always been about acceptance and inclusion, and the series strives to convey that through the playful antics of a diverse cast of characters. Some viewers felt that aspects of the episode 'The Last Roundup' did not stay true to the core message of friendship which is the heart and soul of the series. Hasbro Studios decided to make slight audio alterations to this single episode."
NOW would be the appropriate time to start getting all freaked out over this issue. Personally, I am not going to worry too much. I am disheartened that they've chosen to respond this way, but I am not surprised. Hasbro is a corporation, they have to think of their image. "Derpy" is a debatable term that can either mean "goofy and silly" or "insulting towards disabled people" and frankly I agree that this is not an appropriate word to be used for a kids TV show
The Derpy Issue Part 3Seems like I need to clarify a couple things for people. If you don't know what the hullabaloo is all about, please read through the next couple paragraphs. If you're already caught up to the situation please skip to the second half.
Derpy's History
In the first season of Friendship is Magic, an animation mistake rendered a background pony with "derpy" eyes. The producers thought it was cute and left it in, occasionally sticking the pony in various scenes. While many people liked calling her Ditzy Doo (based on a remark made in Winter Round Up), the general internet population started calling her Derpy Hooves. Derpy became such a huge phenomenon online that the producers decided to include her in more episodes for Season 2. In Season 2 she started appearing more up close and doing strange things in the backgrounds, making for a fun game of "where's waldo" for the fans. The capper to all this was when Derpy got a speaking role in an episode and was referred to AS Derpy by Rainbow
NEWS STORIES (now with more sources!)George Lucas now says Hans Solo never shot first... ever. Even in the 1977 original movie. According to him he had filmed the scene in question from all angles and due to faulty editing it appeared as if Hans shot Greedo and was a "cold blooded killer." This portrayal of Hans apparently rankled in George's mind for such a long time that he attempted to "correct" it in all subsequent re-releases, much to the chagrin and annoyance of Star Wars fans. SOPA Defeated... for now.It looks like SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act) has been officially defeated in Congress ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115265-U-S-Congress-Shelves-SOPA ). During the past week SOPA has had a very difficult time as opposition started to pour in.
To try and appease everyone they removed the dreaded DNS blocking part of the bill (which honestly was the one part of the bill which was freaking everyone out), but it didn't help. The DNS blocking was the part of the bill which stated that if a website was suspected of having copyrighted material, even tangentially related, the whole website would be blocked. Even without that, though, the bill was still a horrible unclear mess.

Mature themes in American AnimationWhen I first discovered Anime, my mind was blown. Here were Japanese animations being made which told adult stories with sex, violence, and all sorts of things I'd never seen before done in American films. As a teenager the constant pandering to children and the reluctance to accept more mature themes and ideas in American animated films pissed me off. Why can't american cartoons be taken more seriously and have stuff for adults too outside of South Park and The Simpsons?
In 1998 Stephen Spielberg tried to change that. After having a successful run of kids cartoons (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pink and the Brain, etc), he took it a step further by giving us a PRIME TIME cartoon series aimed at adults. It was called "Invasion America." It was a sci-fi epic, featured a slew of big name actors including Leonard Nimoy, and featured more adult oriented themes such as sex, violence, and swearing!
It sucked and was a resounding failure.

After SOPA and PIPA were suspended indefinitely after such overwhelmingly loud opposition from various websites and lawmakers, Lamar is trying to create ANOTHER bill which is almost as bad as the two previous ones combined.

This bill (which uses Child Pornography as it's cover) would effectively track every time you look at your bank statement or use a credit card online, and force IP service providers to record your credit card and billing statement info, along with your recent internet search histories, and store them in a "secure" place for 18 months. Anything which looked "suspicious" would immediately be flagged to allow the government to step in.
Since billing statements and online transactions are so common these days, this bill would, In effect, be monitoring everything everyone
Missing the PointI've been noticing a trend lately where people seem to deliberately be missing the point behind stuff in order to complain. I used to think it was just me, as I watched people write up lengthy articles nitpicking and "debunking" a comic I made because they simply missed the point, but I've started seeing it happening to other people too.
Recently over on The Oatmeal, artist Matthew Inman made a joke about guy gamers vs girl gamers. The joke was pretty simple: A guy gamer makes a mistake and gets bitched out by his fellow teammates online. Contrast to that, a girl gamer makes a mistake and her fellow teammates try to comfort her, tell her she's doing great, and make suggestive comments about hooking up. To me the joke was clear, guys treat girls differently online. However, that's not how the rest of the internet saw it...

Follow the TOS
This should be self explanatory, but please follow the Terms of Service agreements you signed for whatever website you're currently on. Not all websites have the same rules and restrictions in their TOS and you should treat each site individually and not expect that since you got away with something on one site means you'll get away with it on another. Most websites do not allow uploading of content that is not your own.

This time they're going after Studio Ghibli's "The Secret World of Arrietty" and accusing, once again, that liberal Hollywood's agenda is corrupting children and turning them into "occu-toddlers." They also turned their sights on the new adaptation of Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. They claim that both movies "demonize the 1%" and that people "offended" by these movies should fight back by... littering. Don't believe me? Internet TimeWe had the Oscars recently and as usual it wasn't without problems. One of the controversies was Chris Rock's biting commentary about doing voice work for animated films, which was unfortunately insulting to the many hard working (yet perpetually  unknown) talents who produce about 90% of all voice work in the animated medium. Chris Rock's joke was funny for his circle of friends and the aging academy, but to younger artists and professionals it was very disrespectful. Perception on the InternetYour average user on the internet can generally say whatever they want about an issue. It's alright to voice an opinion because no one is really going to track you down and attack you for having one (unless you're doing it in a really really public place like a forum or chat room). However, as I've become somewhat popular online, I've noticed a perception from people that I must maintain a neutral and unbiased outlook at all times on every issue.
Regardless of what that issue is I'm not generally free to express my opinion without first listing a whole bunch of qualifiers for "why" I feel this way, or by making it very clear that it's OK for you to disagree. You are not allowed to "sum up" an experience, and it's greatly discouraged for you to generalize. I've notice that this mentality has greatly affected my writing style as it forces me to tip toe very carefully around every issue I address.

Anybody see the latest My Little Pony episode? Holy hell... they actually had "derpy hooves" in the episode and Rainbowdash herself SAYS her name is "Derpy." Even if you don't like MLP:FiM, the fact that the creators of the series went so far as to take a fan created character (fan created in the sense that fans named a unintended background character mistake), use her fan given name (which happened to be meme-tastic) and not only acknowledge it but to actually PUT it into an episode like that... wow. I have a feeling this is kinda the next step of fanbase and media building. And it's awesome! So yeah... "Derpy Hooves" is 100% legit now.

Been watching a lot of minecraft tutorials on mechanisms and machines. Some of them are absolutely insane, and some of them are actually practical. I would very much like to build a "stronghold" in my world which is completely enemy defense proof. Automatic drawbridges, secret compartments, mob crushers, tactical defense, automatic harvesting machines... the works. Will I ever be able to accomplish it? I dunno...

Speaking of, I tried to create my own server only to discover that my wi-fi router/airport system is incompatible to do so. Go figured, right? Wonder if this means I can't join other people's servers too...? Oh Notch... why is the multiplayer so complicated?

yes I did see that episode, it is one of the few times the show actually made me, admittedly, squeal like a girl.

Yeah some of the stuff people do in mine craft is crazy, I mean when I first did a few things with red stone I thought I was pretty good but them I looked up more complex stuff and it was like. "Holly cow". I even saw a video of where some one made a like, 3D printer, it was like 9x9 if I remember correctly. Fully programmable, you could make pretty much anything you could think of, you just have to change the arrangement of switches every time you wanted to make a change.

It's more likely a port forwarding issue with your router and/or modem. It's a common problem with hosting any sort of server in general, not just Minecraft ones. And if that's the case, then no, it shouldn't effect you joing other servers.

It's awesome and all that Derpy has gotten a spotlight in the latest episode, but it worries me slightly. I don't mind creators listening to their fans, so long as they don't take every suggestion just to please them.
