I'm really growing tired of the gaming industry and gamers in general. Am I the only one who sees a paradox in gamers wanting and demanding that gaming be taken seriously as a media, while demanding that the very people (journalists) who are actually critical and deliberately ARE trying to take gaming seriously to toe the line and praise the shit out of every game and give them all 10 stars out of 10 or else?
Most recently The Escapist gave GTA5 a 3.5 out of 4 stars and the internet freaked out because it wasn't a perfect score. Before that Polygon got heat for giving Dragon's Crown a 6.5 out of 10. And before that both Polygon and NowGamer got heat for giving The Last of Us a 7.5 and a 8.5 out of 10. Gamers freak out because they want EVERY journalist to give EVERY game a perfect 10, especially those they've already determined will be amazing games (like GTA5). But at the same time they bitch and moan if a game comes under any sort of attack from an "outside source" and demand that games be taken seriously and try to prove how mature and serious games today are.
It's a dissonance that I'm growing increasingly tired and weary of dealing with. In 2006 I saw potential in the gaming industry to grow and change and become better than it ever had. In 2013 I'm just so tired and frustrated and I feel like we've just gone 180' and are right back where we were years ago. No progress has been made and in some respects things have gotten worse.
I don't own a Wii U, nor do I really think I'll be picking one up this gen. I also probably won't be getting a PS4 or a XBONE either. I just have no interest in gaming at the moment and it's mostly a result of the fans. I just wish we could get out of this boring monocultural sinkhole that gaming seems to be continuing to fall into.
I recently updated my phone to the new iOS 7 operating system and I have to say... it's pretty bad. On the one hand I do appreciate little things like being able to access brightness settings and turn on a flashlight without having to hunt down the apps for it, but primarily I'm just annoyed at the whole overall redesign of the interface.
It's meant to look cleaner and more streamlined, but in the end it just comes across as very "cheap" looking to me. Everything is so flat and bland looking, and the white backgrounds with black text actually make things harder to read oddly enough. Deleting emails use to be a swipe to the right, now its to the left. And the way web sites are organized vertically instead of a nice easy scrolling left to right list is disorienting.
Plus they still haven't fixed 2 of the biggest issues I have with the iOS in general. The ability for my phone to export video to the TV through the cables Apple made, and the ability to put videos in a playlist.
I'm a big proponent of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," and I feel like a lot of the changes were done just to be different and not for any real benefit. Like I said, some of the changes are good, but a vast majority of them are really counter-intuitive, slower than normal, and ugly to look at. Fuck you, Apple.
I'm kinda feeling pretty burned out lately. Most likely a result of the recent amount of hatred and trolling I got for doing those "women's rights" comics. Like Jim Sterling says, thick skin is not infinite. It gets worn down and eroded away and needs time to recuperate. I think that's where I am right now. I'm worn down and I need time to recuperate. I'm gonna keep posting comics, but I think you'll see me far less in the comments and in journals for a while.
