I keep getting asked why I keep focusing so much on women's rights in comics and what-not. syacartoonist.com/seriously-st…
I'm honestly not sure why it's suddenly struck me to start talking about this stuff so much, but I have a theory...
The reason these issues with women in comics and gaming and nerd culture in general is because of inclusivity and broadening demographics. Over a decade ago, nerd culture was still very much male dominated and exclusive. But over the years women have been getting into comics and gaming and everything else geek related much more so. I mean... don't get me wrong, they were ALWAYS there to being with... but for whatever reason it just started to become more socially acceptable to admit that you were a woman and a geek/gamer.
But the problem is that most of nerd culture and gaming are doing things same-old-same-old like they've always been doing things. They produce content exclusively for male audiences and don't understand why women are taking offense to stuff now that they're a larger part of the demographic.
A good example of this was the Hitman Absolution trailer which featured sexy leather clad, booby, gun toting "nuns" getting into a fight with the main character and consequentially getting brutally and graphically beat up. The creators were just going about their business trying to make something "cool" and the very concept that this might be offensive to people seemed to be completely out of their minds. 10 years ago they probably could've gotten away with it because women weren't a big part of the industry and nerd/gaming was much more exclusive. But in today's world? Yeah... no.
And it keeps happening. Women want to be taken seriously as a sizable demographic and every single time they say "hey, this kinda stuff isn't cool, please make content for me" they are met with a torrent of angry gamers/geeks/etc bemoaning about "censorship" and "feminazis" and other derogatory terms like we're in elementary school all over again.
Being inclusive and allowing women to be part of the gaming/comic/nerd culture isn't going to make everything bland or take away your precious big boob'd characters. If anything, allowing NEW voices into the conversation with NEW ideas and concepts will ultimately produce VARIETY. It would give us MORE stuff to look at from a different perspective. Trying to maintain the status-quo is... i'm sorry to say... stagnation. When people bemoan feminists trying to talk about issues in the gaming/geek culture all I can see is people trying to stifle creativity and variety. Ironically the very thing they accuse feminists and women trying to be part of nerd culture of doing.
So yeah... I'm tired of talking about this crap over and over again... but you know... it keeps happening. If you want me to shut up about it things are gonna have to change. Stop fighting so hard to keep everything the way it was a decade ago and grow the fuck up already. Women make up 50% of the earth's population. Stop trying to exclude them because you're afraid of their cooties.
