Lamar Smith, the creator of the two notorious SOPA and PIPA bills, just seems to want to censor everything. After SOPA and PIPA were suspended indefinitely after such overwhelmingly loud opposition from various websites and lawmakers, Lamar is trying to create ANOTHER bill which is almost as bad as the two previous ones combined.

www.slashgear.com/sopa-sponsor…

This bill (which uses Child Pornography as it's cover) would effectively track every time you look at your bank statement or use a credit card online, and force IP service providers to record your credit card and billing statement info, along with your recent internet search histories, and store them in a "secure" place for 18 months. Anything which looked "suspicious" would immediately be flagged to allow the government to step in.

Since billing statements and online transactions are so common these days, this bill would, In effect, be monitoring everything everyone did 24/7. I don't know about you, but I can't go 18 months without using my credit card to purchase something online or view my bank statement. Also, given that hackers are so good at their jobs, is it really wise to have millions of people's credit card, internet search history, and billing info all stored in one place like that?

Stopping child pornography is a worthy cause. Stopping internet piracy is also a worthy cause. But the ways in which Lamar Smith keeps going about trying to implement these bills is extremely detrimental to the millions of good and honest people's privacy.

Protesting this bill will be just as important as protesting SOPA and PIPA. But I think what we should also be trying to do is get Lamar Smith out of the position of power he currently has to prevent him from continuing to create more bills like this. It's pretty clear that this guy doesn't understand how the internet works and while trying to create laws to punish bad people he is unaware that he's also punishing good people. Some individuals who have a strong moral high ground are incapable of seeing how their actions could be construed negatively, and I think Lamar Smith is one of these people. We need to get him out of office (just like we needed to get Jack Thompson disbarred) for the greater good of the internet.

No, the point of this bill is that they're using porn as a cover. It will affect you, because whenever you log into your bank account to check your bills and credit card, or log into any account, they're going to store this information in a large database or something. If hackers get into this, they can steal your credit card information and such. So it affects everybody, whether they look at porn or not.

It reminds me of the Patriot Act, written with the best intention, but done wrong. Like Iron Man in the Civil War comics, except Lamar is no Tony Stark.

2.) Know where he lives.

3.) Aim and shoot.

WOW! Just plain wow, someone please kick Lamar Smith out of the office. I think Lamar is the new Jack Thompson indeed. First SOPA, then PIPA, then ACTA now this.

I mean seriously, CAN'T LAMAR AND CORRUPTED US GOVERMENT JUST LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE AND GIVE US A BREAK!

If they mess with us, Anonymous will fuck them up real bad.

And, in fact, that in itself is one of the flaws of the bill. If Anonymous DOES fuck them up real bad, after the collection has begun, it could potentially result in everyone's banking details.

Remember the PSN hack? Imagine if they found the credit card and banking information of Every. Single. American. Banker.

[link] <Link to latest copy of the bill.

Under: SEC. 4. RETENTION OF CERTAIN RECORDS BY ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION SERVICE PROVIDERS.

Pretty much that entire section should cover what you are looking for. I am not an expert on reading bills, but I can see where people see faults within the bill.

I had actually read the bill myself prior to asking the question; I asked for the author of the journal to link me the copy in the hopes that he would look up the section, read it himself, and see that it actually doesn't do the things that he says it does in the quote I copied.

Basically, the point was that he couldn't, because it was untrue, but I hoped it might inspire him to read the bill and see that.

As far as every actual primary source document I've read thus far relating to this law states, the only new thing this bill can do is make ISPs keep records that they already keep for a longer period of time--nothing like what a lot of people are saying.

This Lamar Smith esquire...

I can see three distinct, possible motivations behind his behaviour.

The first is the easy way out: He is ignorant of how cyberspace works. This is only somewhat likely.

The second is that he is meaninglessly idealistic: blinded by his own faith in his political opinion, and thus unable to make basic calculations.

The third is that he is deliberately malicious, trying his hand at making USA more of a police state.

Personally I find each unlikely. Why do you think he is doing this?

Actually, it occurs to me that one possible way to get rid of this guy is just to be patient. If he keeps trying to wrangle the internet and gets shot down every time, I would think that eventually even his allies would get tired of dealing with him and he'd end up with no support at all.
