New SYAC Up!
Hey guys, new strip for SYAC is up today and we've added a new character! Come check it out! syacartoonist.com/ There will likely be a couple new episodes going up in the next few days as we introduce this new character and what he's about.

CGI Zelda Movie Shut Down... 6 Years Ago

Imagi Animation Studios, the company responsible for the CGI Astro Boy and TMNT movies, made a 1 minute test reel to show to Nintendo trying to pitch for a Legend of Zelda movie. The pitch made in 2007 was ultimately turned down by Nintendo, likely due to Nintendo being extraordinarily squeamish about letting an American animation company handle one of their properties after the abysmal failure of the live action Super Mario Bros movie. And hopes that this project would ever be looked at again were rendered null and void when the american branch of the animation company was shut down back in 2010.

But the good news for everyone is that you can see this 1 minute pitch reel Imagi showed Nintendo now online after it got leaked recently. Keep in mind this was just a pitch, not actual movie footage and designs could've changed over the course of production (and it also looks like they were using assets from their TMNT movie to help). So enjoy the demo for what could've been The Legend of Zelda's first big budget movie.

The Omni

I want this... with Minecraft. I want to exercise while playing video games and avoiding creeper deaths. This is the closest thing to a holodeck that I've seen thus far. Now all they need to do is add Disney's aireal tactitle feedback system ( www.gizmag.com/disneys-aireal-… ) to it and we'd have a working prototype for one of the most immersive holodeck experiences EVER! The future is SOON!

Advertisement character, hehe. I like him already. Well, in an artistic way :p

After seeing the animation they made, I can't say I am surprised that it was turned down. I have no idea how these reels usually look, but I can't say I really liked what they did with it.
That being said, I am still waiting for a really good big-budget Nintendo movie. If this could have resulted into that, then it's too bad it was never accepted. I hope someone else will try to do it sometime!

This. Looks. Epic.
Seriously, if these things would get cheap enough for anyone to buy... Just imagine this as the next gen console 0.o A way to walk without moving is EXACTLY what motion gaming needs. I hope this will get big.

Oh doood... I can see this being in arcades like at the movies or places like that one laser tag area I went to once... that one had a really sick tank VR game.

The reason the Super Mario Bros movie sucked was because it didn't stay true to the games. I think a live action Zelda movie would be awesome if it stayed true to the source material.

Of course I understand Nintendo being reluctant about it. Usually game adaptations aren't very good.

Years ago, I told my friend they needed to do this with a Pokemon game.  I'm very excited to see this finally coming to life, not so much for Pokemon, but for everything :)

I have mixed feelings about that whole CGI Zelda movie. Obviously nothing's gonna happen with it, but I dunno. I think it would have been done well, but perhaps a slight butcher. After Hollywood tried to turn The Last Airbender into a live action film, I fear for all things geeky to be turned into a motion picture by North America. We'll never know I suppose.

I'm going to be awkward and point out that VR has been the 'future' for some time now. Much like fusion, it's always just around the corner. Yes, I know the system is on sale now, but...I'll hold judgement until we know more. However, fingers crossed.

As for the Zelda movie...well lets just say that games have a poor history with cinema. Would you really want a crappy Zelda film?

i kinda like that zelda movie trailer thing... the desing are actually interesting for me, except link's hiar..( it looks weird.. maybe is too long, i'm not sure what's wrong )and ganondorf ( he doesn't look like ganondorf at all.) but those are thing that could hve been changed, and for what it is, i think it looked good.
at the same time... i'm not sure i want to see a zelda movie, so i'm not sad that was cancelled.

Not sure that was supposed to be ganondorf..
Yeah, it's wierd to leave him out, but it might be a minion working for ganondorf, or an new villain (like Vatii).
But, we will never know.. .. ..

well i assumed he was... with the dark skin and red hair. but hey, maybe they were another link and another gerudo king, who knows indeed... or maybe he wasn't even a gerudo.
but as i said before, it looked good just for being a test trailer, but really, i didn't want it to be a movie. it was fun to watch, that's it.

The onmi seems interesting! But from what they showed, I guess it wouldn't be for nonviolent games like animal crossing and harvest moon. Would it? I'd like someone's opinion. ;w;

....... Okay.... I read what you put down for the Legend of Zelda movie. I processed it all, but you know what? I cannot accept it. I cannot accept the fact that this was turned down and will (most likely), never become a full feature film. I feel, if Nintendo got on board and watched the process over, this could have been a wonderful, no, AMAZING film. Still, six years is a long time and it's too late to change teh past now. I'll just have to enjoy this 1 minute and 25 second trailer.

On the Omni, Kritzkast, the Team Fortress 2 podcast, actually discussed the combined usage of the Omni and the Oculus Rift in a previous episode a month or so ago. This is a major step, if not the first major step, in virtual reality gaming. I so want to know more on the pair, especially the Omni. How do you jump? How do you access the loadout/ inventory? Is there a possible pain sensor, like if you take damage you get a small jolt or something? I hope to learn the answers soon.

There's been something out that is like the Omni and it's been out for about 7 years now. It's called the Virtusphere. It's basically a giant ball that rotates as you walk inside it while you wear some virtual-reality equipment. As far as I know, it was invented in and cannot be bought outside of Russia though. Here's a link to its website: www.virtusphere.com/

I keep wondering why people don't demand that thing so the price will be lowered and everyone can get their hands on it and experience a very detailed virtual reality...

That... doesn't look like it would be cheaper at all... The Omni is a platform with special shoes and a holder so you don't fall. The virtusphere is like a 15 foot ball you run inside. I can't imagine that that is more practical or cheaper than the Omni will be...

Ever since I found out about it, I kept wondering why they didn't try to mass-market it or at the very least try to market it for military training in various countries. It would be dead useful. I just wanted to point out that virtual reality already existed. Maybe it inspired the Omni thing? Idk.

Something about Link's design in that short really rubbs me the wrong way... I don't know what it is, the hair perhaps? Same goes for the music too... And it does bother me that the short reminded me of Ocarina of Time too. Now sure, I've only played Skyward Sword (which was amazing) and have seen VGA Playthroughs of OoT and Four Swords Adventures (...and played a little bit of the Four Swords, but never beat it), so I can't call myself the biggest Zelda fan to begin with and thus my opinion isn't that important. But still the design and the fact that it resembled OoT makes me feel like the movie (had it been made and had it resembled that short) would've been pandering to the OoT fans.
That said there would also be a lot of possibilities with a Zelda movie. It could be very cool, and you could have a mute character as the main character (to avoid giving Link an personality). It could be really cool, I mean a disabled main character in a video game movie. How cool could that be? There's a lot of potential there, but I'm not surprised that Nintendo decided against the movie. I mean, remember whe you last saw Link on TV? ...Yeah...

In the hands of good director and studio, a Legend of Zelda movie could be something that's really cool. The games are already cinematic in nature so with the right script and someone who could really bring the source material to life, I'd be optimistic about it.

And after seeing this animated trailer and the April Fools trailer from a couple of years back for a live action version (which was so good that it almost seemed cruel to have it be a prank), I think that there's potential for something good.

And if it was live-action, I'd pick Peter Jackson to helm the films.

I want the Omni now... Then my parents will stop yelling at me when I spend a good four hours straight playing video games. I'd want to play something like, Phantasy Star Online with this, or maybe Shenmue. Although, because of how the set up looks I can imagine that fighting games would be fairly hard to play.

Heh. I guess it'll take a bit more than a cool presentation to wash out of bile that was Zelda cartoon. They might have made a better presentation if they had included some dialogue, to show that it's not going be nearly as bad.

In my opinion I don't think a Zelda movie would be a good idea
1. What'll it be about?
2. How will it fit into the timeline?
3. I haven't seen the animation company's other works except for the tmnt movie but that is because of the nostalgic critic

I don't really want to see a Legend of Zelda film, to be honest. I think it would be too hard to get right and probably wouldn't be worth the time, money and effort. I'd rather have more Zelda games than a film.

In other news, am I right in thinking you're a Doctor Who fan? If so, what are your views on the announcement of Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor? He's a brilliant actor who was fantastic in the dark political comedy The Thick of It and its film spin-off In the Loop. Some people seem to be whining about it because he's a bit older than the last few Doctors, but I'm excited about the appointment. What do you think?

I was very excited through the whole Zelda movie pitch, until...

Cue: Prepubescent, emo Link, whippin' his hair back and forth.

Followed by...

Cue: Middle aged, "I still wear my high school football jersey to remember how cool I used to be" Ganondorf.

I think I'll stick with the games, LOL! Kudos to Nintendo for -not- ruining their best franchise.

After seeing the TMNT and Astro Boy movies, I'm actually glad they weren't allowed to make this movie. I'm not a big fan of their art style choices, and besides that, they took apart the lore of those other two franchises to create their own changed story. While a bit of change is fine, I felt they took it too far and didn't focus enough on the original concepts and stories. That alone makes me happy this was not made. On top of that, their animation has always been very fast, and almost choppy making coesive fight sequences hard to follow, especially in TMNT. While i'm sure the movie wouldn't have been the worst thing ever, it wouldn't have lived up to the games.

The designs looked weird to me in the reel. I liked Zelda, her redesign kept in original elements with a warrior twist, but Link looked too thin to me, and Ganandorf was WAY too pretty. The monsters were pretty cool, though.

I'm a bit bothered Imagi never got a chance to make a full-lenght animated Zelda movie. I would have honestly pay to see it in theaters. I can see that Nintendo is still afraid of making movies based on their franchises, especially after the Mario one from 1993, but it's been 20 years since the SMB movie was made. Things have changed. Video game movies are getting less awful and genuinely good as time goes by. Plus, after about 15 animated Pokémon movies being made, I think it's time to allow other Nintendo franchises to get the big-screen treatment, hopefully in animated format.

OMG Omni + Occulus Rift = Every gamer's wet dream becoming reality. *w*
"Shut up and take my money"-indeed. =P

Also, that Zelda movie, I probably would buy it and totally watch it, but in all honesty... the reel itself is kinda mediocre in all honesty.
Sure, its got a big fight scene but the intro as well as the castle scene made me think they were probably going for the 'beaten-to-death' great war scenario.
Link is cool in the games because he's a lone-wolf, he does everything by himself for 'the greater good', it's the textbook example of 'protagonist centered morality'.
And sure, he's sometimes being aided by others, but he's always the one triumphing.
This is also what makes the games feel special, what makes the player feel special like: "Yeah, I did that! I made a difference" which makes the rewarding so much better.
True, it's only a Demo-Reel and I probably would've loved it anyways. =3
