I'm going to try and use my platform here on DA to reach out to my fellow gamers and recommend that, if possible, you don't buy your big ticket titles at GameStop for the next few months.
I'm not gonna give any lengthy reasons for doing so, all that can be found in the video link. I just personally have issues with GameStop (the company not the employees), and want to do my part to take them down a peg.
So if you can, don't go to GameStop to buy your big ticket titles unless there really are no other stores available to you. Go to Target, Walmart, Best Buy, or buy online. If you need to go to GameStop, do so to get the smaller independent titles you normally can't find anywhere else.
Now, I realize that I am a little late on this. I meant to post about this before Super Mario 3D Land was released but I got sidetracked. There's a good chance that many of you already bought the latest Mario, Zelda, or COD games right away, and there's an even greater chance that a large percentage of those sales were at GameStop.
But since Christmas is coming up soon, I have faith that not everyone has purchased these titles just yet and won't be expecting to play them for another month or so. If that's the case, if you haven't bought them yet, please just try to do whatever you can to avoid GameStop and purchase them elsewhere. Best Buy, for example, was giving away a $10 gift card with the purchase of Zelda and they also have the limited edition bundles too!
I doubt this will have much of an impact on things, but I just wanted to try. The less of a monopoly GameStop becomes, the better it will be for everyone including gamers.
Addendum:
I suppose there are a few things I should mention. For starters the used games system employed by GameStop is hurtful to the industry. Companies only make profit on the first sale, and every returned and used sale thereafter goes to GameStop. Thanks to the trade-in policy, GameStop makes almost full price off used new games. It's a great system for us, because it lets us be frugal with our money, but it's lousy for the game companies.
On a personal note, I had a bad incident at a GameStop when I tried to pick up the free demo disk for Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii. GameStop lied to their employees and were forcing customers to buy a pre-order for the game BEFORE they got to try the demo disk. I only got my demo by printing out a disclaimer from Capcom stating that doing that to their customers was counterintuitive.
Steam and other online services like it are perfectly acceptable options too. I also want to mention that this is not about hating the employees who work there.

A few years ago I tried to sell my original Nintendo DS so I could upgrade to a DS Lite. I called GameStop first to see how much money they'd give me for it, and they told me something like $40. I thought, "Well, okay, that doesn't sound too bad. I bought my system used anyway."
When I went there the next day, they said they'd only pay $20 for the original DS. Actually, it wasn't even $20. It was more like $18. WAAAAAY less than even a USED Nintendo DS was worth. I mean, at that point in time the system had only evolved ONCE. And that particular system's only flaw was a mild screen collaboration issue that just had to be tweaked every once in a while. Everything else worked perfectly. Anyway, the bottom line was that it was pathetic. I went to a Hastings instead and they payed me $60 in store credit that I used to purchase my new DS Lite with.
So, yeah. That's my problem with the place. It's too greedy.
I understand what Moviebob is talking about (also like how he doesn't force the argument on
people and only suggests) but...Well, I REALLY like going to GameStop.
I'm sorry to see some people have had terrible experiences with GameStop but, I
have had no such experiences. The workers are friendly and REALLY know their stuff.
Seriously, I could pick any game title, and the guy there will give me a full on review.
I'm guessing this is directed more at shoppers who abuse the used game system?
The only reason I'll buy a used game is if it is an old game, something that isn't on sale at other
stores anymore. Such as a GameCube game or a GameBoy Advanced game.
If it's new, I'm sure as heck not gonna wait until a used copy pops up somewhere.
I'm gonna buy it right away!! But, that's just how I am. c:
Try shopping at Walmart? Their selection of games is very limited.
There are some within my taste, buuuuut...not enough to want to make me buy there.
(Lots of simple kid games like "Littlest Pet Shop" and "Barbie." Not my thing.)
New games, yes, they got those. None of the old ones though.
I can't really be sure if GameStop is causing these problems for the game industry.
I don't work for the game industry and I don't work for GameStop.
I have no statistics to go off of, and I won't really know the truth.
It will all depend on who I trust.
I apologize, but, I'll be sticking with GameStop, for now.
The day it gets destroyed like Borders will be a depressing day for me.
And that's my two cents.
It's a real shame you're so misinformed. Honestly, I'd suggest you do your homework a bit more next time and not be so intent on following blindly in the footsteps of someone else's opinion without looking at both sides first.
For example:

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but you have no right to make those who think differently feel as if they are doing something wrong or incorrect. Just because you had foul incidents at GameStop doesn't mean others have. That being said, I'm a bit disappointed in you.
But hey, I'm just some fan with an apparent unpopular opinion.
