138 (who?)
As many of you know in the first season of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" there was an animation mistake resulting in a background character having googly eyes. Internet fans of the show (bronies) latched on to the character and nick-named her Derpy Hooves.

Since the show has become such a huge internet phenomenon, Hasbro has responded to the appreciation by acknowledging the strange character and inserting her into strange places throughout the second season.

In "Feeling Pinky" she appears as the reason for a number of huge objects dropped from the sky.
In "Luna Eclipse" she appears dressed in a Halloween costume of made of paper bags.
In the Rainbowdash and Fluttershy duet song in "May the Best Pet Win" she creepily peeks her head out of the chicken coop.
In "Sweet and Elite" she appears inconspicuously dressed in her paper bag outfit hidden among fancy ponies during Rarity's musical number.

Hasbro's decision to accept the show's unique internet fame and fanbase is a really amazing gesture on their part and it helps to strengthen the bond between the show's creators and their fans.

Seeing Derpy appear in episodes is almost like a "Where's Waldo" game now. It never interferes with the overall message of the episode, but it's also a nice nod to their older internet savvy fans. Likewise, references to memes like "Chocolate Rain," or movies like "The Big Lebowski," allow them to enjoy the show on a different level than children would.

I don't have anything else to say on the matter. I just think it's a really neat thing and I'm amazed that a big professional animation/toy company would so willingly embrace content made by their fans.

I found this while looking for articles about the newest issue about Derpy Hooves' character being offensive, and I just wanted to ask you what you think about the whole business, since you seem to have an actual brain of your own.
Take into consideration that I've never watched the show, although if only to understand this controversy, I might.

Reminds me of what Marvel does with lots of there movies. They'll usually sneak Stan Lee into it in some minor roll with a one-liner. It's a lot of fun as a Marvel fan to be watching for Stan to pop in.

Now all they need to do is release her in toy form. I'd buy without question XD

There's a Big Lebowski reference? What?

Check out the episode Cutie Pox, the first 5 minutes of which takes place in a bowling alley. I think you'll find the reference pretty easily.

I mean, I'm all for playing "Where's Derpy" and all, but I wish she'd have a bigger role. When season 1 ended, they did announce that she became an official character. For a character whose status was elevated from background character to official character, she's still being treated like a background character -.-
