Honestly Tired of it
I’m honestly sick and tired of making comics or journals or whatever about women’s rights. But it seems like every week there’s a new story about how some asshole guy makes some sort or sexist remark, or how women are being excluded from some place, or killed in others... I’m so sick and tired of it all. I wish I didn’t have to talk about it all the time because I think “women’s rights” are really just part of having “common sense,” but apparently the rest of geek/gaming culture doesn’t think that way.

I was going to make a couple of comics for SYAC elaborating on these recent issues, but I just don’t feel like it anymore. I don’t want SYAC to become a preach-wagon for Women’s Right’s issues more than they already have. So instead I’m bringing you the rundown in this journal instead of making more comics about them.

David Goyer
David Goyer is a screenwriter most famous for working on Man of Steel, the Nolan Dark Knight trilogy of Batman movies, and other superhero films. He’s currently writing the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League screenplays. Recently at a convention he was asked about She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter, and had some idiotic things to say.

I’m not gonna post the transcripts from the interview, if you want to read them you can read them here: www.themarysue.com/david-goyer…

But suffice to say, he called She-Hulk a “porn star designed to fuck the Hulk” and proceeded to call anyone who was familiar with Martian Manhunter (after asking people in the audience to raise their hands if they knew who he was) “people who need to get laid.”

There’s no excuse for his unprofessional and disgusting behavior. Especially since She-Hulk is actually Bruce Banner’s COUSIN. And do I need to explain how calling your fans “virgins” for knowing a comic character is disrespectful?

It’s not even so much that he’s joking in such an offhanded manner that bothers me. THIS is the man who’s in charge of bringing Wonder Woman to the screen. A man who believes She-Hulk is a porn star designed to fuck The Hulk. I’m sorry but... I’ve lost all faith in Warner Bros at this point. Fire that asshole and get some actual professional talent on your films, DC.

Janelle Asselin Gets Rape Threats for Reviewing Teen Titan Cover
This one is less complicated. Janelle Asselin (a woman who worked in the industry as the DC editor of Batman and line editor at Newsrama), criticized the cover for a recent Teen Titan book, explaining in detail why she disliked it.

That’s it. That’s all she did.

And for that she started receiving death threats, rape threats, and a whole slew of other negative responses. For reviewing a cover to a book.

Look guys... it’s one thing to bark and bleat when you think censorship is going on (such as when Anita Sarkeesian disables comments on her videos), but criticism itself is NEVER censorship. As much as I hate a lot of the criticism lobbied against me on the internet, I’m not gonna try and stop people from expressing an opinion. I can politely request the people posting criticism think twice and remove the work if I feel it’s too offensive, but in the end it’s up to the user to decide not me. And the same goes here. All she did was criticize a COVER for a book. Not the content inside the book. Just the cover. And she EXPLAINED WHY SHE HATED IT. She wrote lengthy detailed explanations for why she didn’t like it. So it’s not like she’s just “hating for hate’s sake” or anything so stupid.

Good god people... grow the fuck up... This is NOT something to get up in arms over. She is allowed to have her opinion. You’re even allowed to disagree with her opinion. But never, under any circumstances, think that rape and death threats are justifiable responses. EVER.

Sigh... to read more please go here: www.thedailybeast.com/articles…

California Killer
I don’t even want to talk about this one, because it would just be giving the sick twisted individual the attention he obviously craved. So instead I just want to say, if you live in California, or know anyone affected by it, please do your best to support them. Donate to local charities, send them prayers, do whatever you can to help those who had to suffer at this sick asshole’s futile rampage.

Feminism And Men
One of the reasons I self identify as a Feminist is because Feminism believes men aren’t idiots. Feminism believes that men have self control, are capable of thinking with their brains not their dicks, and generally believes that men can make a positive difference by being supportive. Whenever I see issues like the ones I’ve described here in this journal come up, it pisses me off to see people dismiss them as “men can’t control themselves around women.”

I’m sorry but FUCK YOU if you think that. That is not only victim blaming, but incredibly disrespectful towards men too. As a man myself, I refuse to be associated with idiots incapable of keeping things in their pants at the sight of a pretty woman. This is not 1943. You are not the Wolf from Red Hot Riding Hood. It is not “instinct” to lose control and harass, attack, slander, or murder a woman for looking a certain way. Fuck anyone who believes that bullshit.

Feminism is not about hating men, but about believing that men can be better than the lowliest basest instincts that society tells us men are. That men are capable of thinking rationally and not blaming women for problems they’ve caused. In believing that men can and will stand up for and with women when an injustice happens.

I dunno... I guess after reading some of the comments from the last SYAC about the “consent with cosplay” issue, I just feel like THIS side of Feminism gets overlooked or brushed aside a lot.

It's nice to know that some people actually understand the true concept of feminism. Living in a world where it's ok to ignore or attack a woman's opinion because she is a woman becomes more depressing by the day. One time I made a comment on an article featured on a pretty misogynistic site (I can't remember what it was called now for the life of me) and was immediately attacked by about four men, accusing me of being a feminazi and a stupid woman (which is only partly true; I'm genderfluid, biologically female but dominantly male). Granted, the whole website was disgusting and filled with those kinds of opinions, so perhaps they felt I'd penetrated their inner sanctum and had no right to do so, as a woman or just as a passerby. In reality, I was more interested to see what kind of response I'd receive by politely explaining why I was appalled by the article. Let me tell you, I was quite disappointed.

As much as I would like to see a world where everyone is treated equally and with the respect they deserve, I understand that it is impossible. This is why I identify as a feminist rather than an equalist, like a few friends of mine. I will defend anyone who needs defending, but many of my concerns lie in the women who are more likely to be treated like dirt, and so I stick to feminism. There's nothing wrong with identifying as such; it doesn't mean you want to see men crushed under stiletto heels. Being a supporter of the LGBT community doesn't mean you want to turn all the straight people gay. Being in a rights activist group means just that, you want your group to have equal rights actively granted, as it is for everyone else. You want not only your cause to be recognized and supported, but also the people you're standing up for.

I once read a post on tumblr (because not everyone on that site is crazy) that explained why it's important for all women to support the feminist movement. By rejecting feminism, you've thus rejected everyone who's fighting for you now, and everyone who's fought for you over time. Without feminism, women wouldn't be allowed to vote, get a job, or hell, even leave their house very often, if at all. You have to challenge the system before it will change. Only action can stimulate an equal and opposite reaction. As for men, well, if you don't support equal rights for women then I can't even fathom how wrong you are. Worse, if you participate in slander of feminism, or if you target specific women and/or the whole gender with threats or stereotypes, then I will probably seethe in rage but be unable to hate you because I promised myself I'd never hate anyone. Still, it's an awful thing to do and I will dislike you a lot.

I should probably shut up now. Thanks for reading my drabble, and thanks being someone who speaks out against the injustices of life. Have a great day. c:

Just a question:

Would a feminist-approved character be along the lines of a well-rounded female character?

I would say that the best-designed characters don't truly matter at all whether they're male or female, but that's not quite right.  Basically, you need to design a character that neither completely accepts nor completely rejects societal pretenses for women.

( www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1qndg… ) Extra Credits did an episode on it a good while back; maybe that can help you out.

Just got back from this.  However, that episode focuses only on video games.  I was asking because lately, when I hear the word "feminist", I think of those who treat Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson and Daenerys in defensive idol worship, and that annoys me.  If you're interested, here is my list of favorite heroines from books, TV and movies:

Keep doing what you're doing, Andy. No one will listen unless you're a white male.
