Honestly Tired of it
I’m honestly sick and tired of making comics or journals or whatever about women’s rights. But it seems like every week there’s a new story about how some asshole guy makes some sort or sexist remark, or how women are being excluded from some place, or killed in others... I’m so sick and tired of it all. I wish I didn’t have to talk about it all the time because I think “women’s rights” are really just part of having “common sense,” but apparently the rest of geek/gaming culture doesn’t think that way.

I was going to make a couple of comics for SYAC elaborating on these recent issues, but I just don’t feel like it anymore. I don’t want SYAC to become a preach-wagon for Women’s Right’s issues more than they already have. So instead I’m bringing you the rundown in this journal instead of making more comics about them.

David Goyer
David Goyer is a screenwriter most famous for working on Man of Steel, the Nolan Dark Knight trilogy of Batman movies, and other superhero films. He’s currently writing the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League screenplays. Recently at a convention he was asked about She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter, and had some idiotic things to say.

I’m not gonna post the transcripts from the interview, if you want to read them you can read them here: www.themarysue.com/david-goyer…

But suffice to say, he called She-Hulk a “porn star designed to fuck the Hulk” and proceeded to call anyone who was familiar with Martian Manhunter (after asking people in the audience to raise their hands if they knew who he was) “people who need to get laid.”

There’s no excuse for his unprofessional and disgusting behavior. Especially since She-Hulk is actually Bruce Banner’s COUSIN. And do I need to explain how calling your fans “virgins” for knowing a comic character is disrespectful?

It’s not even so much that he’s joking in such an offhanded manner that bothers me. THIS is the man who’s in charge of bringing Wonder Woman to the screen. A man who believes She-Hulk is a porn star designed to fuck The Hulk. I’m sorry but... I’ve lost all faith in Warner Bros at this point. Fire that asshole and get some actual professional talent on your films, DC.

Janelle Asselin Gets Rape Threats for Reviewing Teen Titan Cover
This one is less complicated. Janelle Asselin (a woman who worked in the industry as the DC editor of Batman and line editor at Newsrama), criticized the cover for a recent Teen Titan book, explaining in detail why she disliked it.

That’s it. That’s all she did.

And for that she started receiving death threats, rape threats, and a whole slew of other negative responses. For reviewing a cover to a book.

Look guys... it’s one thing to bark and bleat when you think censorship is going on (such as when Anita Sarkeesian disables comments on her videos), but criticism itself is NEVER censorship. As much as I hate a lot of the criticism lobbied against me on the internet, I’m not gonna try and stop people from expressing an opinion. I can politely request the people posting criticism think twice and remove the work if I feel it’s too offensive, but in the end it’s up to the user to decide not me. And the same goes here. All she did was criticize a COVER for a book. Not the content inside the book. Just the cover. And she EXPLAINED WHY SHE HATED IT. She wrote lengthy detailed explanations for why she didn’t like it. So it’s not like she’s just “hating for hate’s sake” or anything so stupid.

Good god people... grow the fuck up... This is NOT something to get up in arms over. She is allowed to have her opinion. You’re even allowed to disagree with her opinion. But never, under any circumstances, think that rape and death threats are justifiable responses. EVER.

Sigh... to read more please go here: www.thedailybeast.com/articles…

California Killer
I don’t even want to talk about this one, because it would just be giving the sick twisted individual the attention he obviously craved. So instead I just want to say, if you live in California, or know anyone affected by it, please do your best to support them. Donate to local charities, send them prayers, do whatever you can to help those who had to suffer at this sick asshole’s futile rampage.

Feminism And Men
One of the reasons I self identify as a Feminist is because Feminism believes men aren’t idiots. Feminism believes that men have self control, are capable of thinking with their brains not their dicks, and generally believes that men can make a positive difference by being supportive. Whenever I see issues like the ones I’ve described here in this journal come up, it pisses me off to see people dismiss them as “men can’t control themselves around women.”

I’m sorry but FUCK YOU if you think that. That is not only victim blaming, but incredibly disrespectful towards men too. As a man myself, I refuse to be associated with idiots incapable of keeping things in their pants at the sight of a pretty woman. This is not 1943. You are not the Wolf from Red Hot Riding Hood. It is not “instinct” to lose control and harass, attack, slander, or murder a woman for looking a certain way. Fuck anyone who believes that bullshit.

Feminism is not about hating men, but about believing that men can be better than the lowliest basest instincts that society tells us men are. That men are capable of thinking rationally and not blaming women for problems they’ve caused. In believing that men can and will stand up for and with women when an injustice happens.

I dunno... I guess after reading some of the comments from the last SYAC about the “consent with cosplay” issue, I just feel like THIS side of Feminism gets overlooked or brushed aside a lot.

What's worse about the whole "men can't control themselves around women" mindset is that its adherents traditionally also believed that only men were capable of high-function reason and authority (when they're not forcibly devolved into hormone-driven apes at the slightest hint of lust, of course).

It's nice to know that some people actually understand the true concept of feminism. Living in a world where it's ok to ignore or attack a woman's opinion because she is a woman becomes more depressing by the day. One time I made a comment on an article featured on a pretty misogynistic site (I can't remember what it was called now for the life of me) and was immediately attacked by about four men, accusing me of being a feminazi and a stupid woman (which is only partly true; I'm genderfluid, biologically female but dominantly male). Granted, the whole website was disgusting and filled with those kinds of opinions, so perhaps they felt I'd penetrated their inner sanctum and had no right to do so, as a woman or just as a passerby. In reality, I was more interested to see what kind of response I'd receive by politely explaining why I was appalled by the article. Let me tell you, I was quite disappointed.

As much as I would like to see a world where everyone is treated equally and with the respect they deserve, I understand that it is impossible. This is why I identify as a feminist rather than an equalist, like a few friends of mine. I will defend anyone who needs defending, but many of my concerns lie in the women who are more likely to be treated like dirt, and so I stick to feminism. There's nothing wrong with identifying as such; it doesn't mean you want to see men crushed under stiletto heels. Being a supporter of the LGBT community doesn't mean you want to turn all the straight people gay. Being in a rights activist group means just that, you want your group to have equal rights actively granted, as it is for everyone else. You want not only your cause to be recognized and supported, but also the people you're standing up for.

I once read a post on tumblr (because not everyone on that site is crazy) that explained why it's important for all women to support the feminist movement. By rejecting feminism, you've thus rejected everyone who's fighting for you now, and everyone who's fought for you over time. Without feminism, women wouldn't be allowed to vote, get a job, or hell, even leave their house very often, if at all. You have to challenge the system before it will change. Only action can stimulate an equal and opposite reaction. As for men, well, if you don't support equal rights for women then I can't even fathom how wrong you are. Worse, if you participate in slander of feminism, or if you target specific women and/or the whole gender with threats or stereotypes, then I will probably seethe in rage but be unable to hate you because I promised myself I'd never hate anyone. Still, it's an awful thing to do and I will dislike you a lot.

I should probably shut up now. Thanks for reading my drabble, and thanks being someone who speaks out against the injustices of life. Have a great day. c:

Would a feminist-approved character be along the lines of a well-rounded female character?

I would say that the best-designed characters don't truly matter at all whether they're male or female, but that's not quite right.  Basically, you need to design a character that neither completely accepts nor completely rejects societal pretenses for women.

Just got back from this.  However, that episode focuses only on video games.  I was asking because lately, when I hear the word "feminist", I think of those who treat Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson and Daenerys in defensive idol worship, and that annoys me.  If you're interested, here is my list of favorite heroines from books, TV and movies:

THIS is the feminism I love. I may only be young, but I believe I have made my decision about how to view this. I totally agree with exactly what was on here. Men should know how to be level-headed and be in control of themselves without even having to think about it. For some reason I think that's how most men were in the 50's and such. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my view of that era it's mostly just gentlemen that wandered the streets. It's unfortunate we grew out of that before women were treated a little more equally.

Was about to clap then I saw the part where you said you were a man.....sorry, almost every feminist I've met had some sort of beef against me simply because I was a guy despite me not doing anything to them. The folks over in Jezebel are very much a bunch of man hating women. Sorry, until I see self proclaimed feminist actually act for men in the same equal manner they do their own gender, then I'll buy it. Until my perception of feminists will be low.

I'm a feminist and I don't hate men. There are some men I do hate, but for very different reasons. Like every group, there are radicals who point the blame at others and we all get thrown into the same group.
Unfortunately, we also live in a world where cis-white males have always dominated women and they still do (higher wages, less sexual assault, etc. etc). However, radical feminists cannot see past the fact that this is not the fault of every male out there and it makes it hard for those of us who are honestly just fighting for equality and respect.
Not all men are bad guys, just like not all feminists - both female and self identifying males - aren't either.

That makes you hurtful, instead of helpful.

No it doesn't, it just makes me think less of feminists. If I don't believe in your group then I'm the "problem". No, I think I'll just continue treating everyone equal regardless of gender etc, something I've always done since before I even knew what "feminist" was. Your concern is first and foremost the rights of women, not everyone. You are the reason why men's right's activists exist.

The problem with "equalists" is that they are trying to treat everyone equally in a system that is fundamentally unequal. Men have, in America at least, been completely in charge of everything for centuries. Men owned property. Men owned people. Men owned land. Men were allowed to vote. Men ran businesses. Men worked. Men did this. Men did that. Men pretty much did EVERYTHING.

Women, and minorities for that matter, have had to struggle to even come CLOSE to being equal... and that change has only happened within the past 50 years. There are people alive today who lived during a time when women and blacks and other minorities DID NOT HAVE RIGHTS. And just because we've made progress does not mean now that everything is on a level playing field. Sexism and racism and homophobia still exist... and it still exists in just enough of a majority to be detrimental to pretty much everyone... except men.

One of the many statistics men's rights activists like to throw out there is that men use to be FORCED to go to war (as if this was something applied to them by an outside source and not... well... themselves). But it's because of feminism that Men do not have to be forced into war anymore. It's because of feminism that men can actually be stay at home dads with little to no social stigma. It's because of feminism that men are allowed to express their feelings more openly and not have to keep everything bottled up because "real men don't cry." In a hilariously ironic way... Feminism is why men feel safe enough now to bitch about rights they don't really have to worry about.

Another fun statistic men's rights like to toss out? That men serve longer terms in prison than women. "Equalists" believe that EVERYONE should serve the SAME amount of time, men or women. But when you actually stop and look at the statistics, women are LESS likely to commit the same crime and be sent back to jail than men are. So why "punish" women for what is clearly better behavior and reform in that scenario? Just because men can't get it together, women should be forced to serve outrageous sentences in jail when they've proven time and time again that they don't go back to jail as often? That's not equality at all.

And I know you're gonna bring up the "men don't get custody of their kids in divorces" argument, because I've already seen you bring it up in this thread, so I'm just gonna point out this article that goes into the statistics of court cases: everydayfeminism.com/2013/08/b…
And this article that explains how "no fault divorce" actually hurts both men AND women, but usually favors men while demonizing women. www.thepublicdiscourse.com/201…

The thing is... no one is actively trying to take men's rights away from them. There are not groups trying to actively REMOVE rights they already have. Unlike, say, a lot of conservatives who are trying to dictate what women can do with their bodies, or who should be allowed to marry in what state. Men's "rights" are not in need of being challenged. They've HAD RIGHTS BECAUSE AMERICA WAS FOUNDED BY MEN WHO WROTE THE LAWS.

Do men have "problems?" Absolutely. And feminists are fighting FOR those problems already. As I already mentioned, the GOOD to men in american society has largely come from feminists working for those causes. Men's rights groups, on the other hand, tend to rely on bullying, harassment, and really negative tactics to try and shut people up, rather than actually work towards a common good.

Equalism is a good concept in theory. And in theory I would agree with you that everyone should be treated equally no matter what. But sadly we do not live in that hypothetical world yet. The world is still unequal. Certain groups STILL get unfair treatment over others. Treating everyone equal in that scenario would just maintain the status quo. I've done this before but here: let's do it by the math:

Say women = 3 beans and Men = 12.
Equalists want everyone to be treated the same, so let's award 5 beans to each group.
Now Women = 8 beans and Men = 17.
Huh... that's not very equal is it? Men STILL have an unfair advantage in this scenario.

And that's pretty much what equalism means right now. Treating everyone the same, in a system where things are not the same, doesn't improve things. You should instead be fighting to get the inequalities removed so that we CAN all become equalists and treat everyone the same. Starting off on the assumption everything is already equal, when it's not, is a fallacy and creates more problems than it solves. It dismisses legitimate concerns for BOTH genders, and it ignores problems that need to be fixed in favor of trying to create a false reality where everything is perfect.

So yeah... that's why I'm a feminist. That's why Men's Rights Activists are stupid. That's why Equalists are pointless (for the moment). Please look over what I wrote and actually do a little research. It's OK to be a man and NOT be on the side of MRA's you know...

Men's Right's Activists are a joke, you understand that, right?
Women's Right's Activists exist because they have too.
Men aren't told what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
Men are automatically paid a higher wage when given a job over their female counterpart, even if the female is more qualified or equally matched education wise.
Men are given free erection medication but many women *STILL* cannot get free birth control pills.
Every six seconds, a woman falls victim to one form or another of sexual assault but is to scared to report it because the first question asked is "what were you wearing" because apparently, that fucking matters. IT DOESN'T
Men had voting rights before Women.
Blacks had voting rights before Women.
Women are told they can't be scientists.
WOMEN, whom WITHOUT, you would not be on this planet right now, are constantly treated as second class citizens because of misogynistic neanderthals.

one of the things that tick me off about this whole thing is that you will have some people who will tell women here in the states to stop complaining, that they have it good.  And yes, we do have it good, better than a lot of countries.  But there are still some things that aren't right.  Like, if a woman is raped, why is one first questions "what were you wearing?"  who fucking cares? If she was walking around naked that STILL does not give anyone the right to touch her without her consent.     So, yes I do feel that women, even in the states do still have things to complain about.

And, I too hate it when people say "men just can't control themselves" it's an insult to men, basically saying that all men are sex manics and nothing else and that simply isn't true.  Oh...some men are.  But most men can and do "control themselves" just fine.

On a less serious note, but something that still ticks me off: if a woman is upset or angry or whatever, that  doesn't necessarily mean she's on her period. It means she's a human being who has emotions and opinions just like you do...she just might be a little more open it expressing them.  So can we please stop making "you're just on your period" or "somebody is PMSing" the default answer to women's problems, as if showing emotion is a bad thing?

It's not a women's rights issue. That sort of abuse isn't based on sex. From what I've read, male internet celebrities receive equal amount of abuse - death threats, insults or even worse prank calls, vicious ordering of pizza and similar stuff in their name, false reports on Police that make SWAT visit their houses.

Read this for example:

www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/ne…

By the way, rapists aren't people who don't know about women's rights. They are vile people in general. Most of rapists are also bullies and generally violent people.

Bravo! The fact that you're a man yourself just makes it even better! I hate how feminists are accused of being over dramatic attention seekers who react to the slightest thing... As a feminist, I believe in equality. I believe that women shouldn't be treated poorly just because they have breasts and a vagina as opposed to a penis. At the end of the day, it's what's inside that counts! Extremely cheesy, and I hate myself for using that line, but it's so true! I will proudly admit that I am a feminist, but that does NOT mean that I refer to men as "sexist pigs" on a regular basis, or think that the opposite sex should feel the need to walk on eggshells around us just because we're women. Like you've stated in your journal, it should just be common sense! The human race is going to chew each other to pieces day by day until we all realize that there's no need to be involved in such a petty squabble! The fact that black and white citizens are now living amongst each other naturally, and homosexuals can feel and sense of safety and comfort in coming out to friends and family gives me hope for a future where sexism is just a distant memory... And a laughable one at that! And we're all going to be wondering why on earth there was such a kerfuffle in the first place! Fingers crossed :D

Feminists like that are the minority among feminists, they're basically the one vocal minority that makes everyone look bad. Generally speaking, every other feminist HATES these people far more than the rest of the world does for just making it harder to take women's rights seriously.
